On the Development and Morphology of the Mandibular and Hyoid Muscles of Mammals

چکیده
IN the course of a paper on the morphology of the muscles of the head in Vertebrates published in this Journal two years ago, I gave a short description of those of the mandibnlar and hyoid segments in the rabbit. There is great difficulty in distinguishing muscle-Anlagen from surrounding mesoblast in the early stages of developing Mammals, and, not quite satisfied with some of the statements made, I have re-investigated the phenomena. The inquiry has been much facilitated by Prof. J. P. Hill, who very kindly lent me sections of Dasyurus viverrinus—an animal which is born with two masticatory muscles only and an iucudomeckelian joint, and in which the development of typical mammalian muscles and of a squamoso-mandibular joint takes place after birth. These changes can be easily followed, and enable one to interpret the more obscure phenomena occurring in Mammals with a longer intra-uterine development. Other Mammals have also been investigated, viz. pig, rabbit, Phoca vitulina, Halichoerus grypus, Bradypus marmoratus, Dasypus no vemcinctus, Manis pentadactyla, Didelphys aurita, Echidna aculeata, Ornithorhynchus.

On [the Development and Morphology of the Pharyngeal, Laryngeal, and Hypobranchial Muscles of Mammals
THIS paper is a continuation of one published in this Journal (1914, vol. 59) on "The Development and Morphology of the Mandibular and Hyoid Muscles of Mammals." Ifc deals with the structure of the pharyngeal, laryngeal, and hypobranchial muscles of Ornithorhynchus and Echidna, with the development of these muscles in Dasyurus v ive r r inus and some other Marsupials, in the pig and rabbit. The...

In this investigation, the position of hyoid bone was compared in three skeletal groups of class I, II and III. The study was based on evaluating 77 lateral cephalometric radiographs, 40 girls and 37 boys, which were divided into 3 groups. Group 1, 2, and 3 consist of 26, 25, and 26 radiographs. 19 cephalometric landmarks and 10 planes were used in order to tracing the radiographs. In all patie...

Background and Aim: Unlike other bones of the head and neck, hyoid bone has no bony articulations. It is connected to mandible, cranium and pharynx through muscles and ligaments. During treatment with functional appliance in patients with class II div1 malocclusion, mandible is positioned in inferior and anterior direction. Regarding the relation between hyoid and mandibular bone, alterations o...

Introduction: In our study, we aimed 200 cases were evaluated for the length, width and angle of hyoid bone and its distance from certain anatomical structures. Methods: This study was perfomed retrospectively in 2010 - 2013 on 200 CT images. 3D volume rendering images of pure hyoid bone were created from the axial CT images in 1 mm slice thickness. In our study, 200 cases (94 female, 106 male...
متن کاملEvolution of muscle activity patterns driving motions of the jaw and hyoid during chewing in Gnathostomes.
Although chewing has been suggested to be a basal gnathostome trait retained in most major vertebrate lineages, it has not been studied broadly and comparatively across vertebrates. To redress this imbalance, we recorded EMG from muscles powering anteroposterior movement of the hyoid, and dorsoventral movement of the mandibular jaw during chewing. We compared muscle activity patterns (MAP) duri...
